Yesterday, in Cottonwood’s worship service, member Mike talked about fasting. He explained how it helps him to get closer to God. Fasting is an effective way to build and strengthen your relationship with Him. In fact, there are lots ways to develop this vital bond.
Living somewhat near the river, I go down there from time to time to walk, run, sit, and meditate. There is virtually no noise from people, no clamor from traffic, no disturbing telephones. An occasional cry of a chipmunk, a runner navigating a distant trail, or the splash of the river plotting its course around a piece of old driftwood merely delight the ears.
This environment is a splendid one in which to be with God. As I ponder His creation, I talk to Him and He seems to reply as I sense the reassuring comfort of his presence. The contentment is overwhelming, yet humbling.
We all need ways to bask in His power and love. What do you do to get closer to God?

The way I pray the best, is being a Red Sox fan. I pray more suring baseball season than ever. "God, PLEASE let the Sox win again. God, if the Yankees choose to lose, it would be okay with me if you let them!"
Yankees are out, Sox are in, it's like a hug from Jesus to look at the sports page.
I am also trying to fast. I gave up all beverages except for water, milk, and tea. So far I've only had water. I REALLY want a soda or a beer... Gosh, could you even imagine 40 days of this? (I suppose it's called Lent, but still!)
I'm whining about giving up Oreos and diet coke! I am spoiled. I think i sacrifice so much in life and now realize how little I really do. When Oreos and diet coke are a sacrifice, how can I ever give up the big things? I just didn't think it would be this hard! I heard Dan is giving up both alcohol and tobacco...
"What do you do to get closer to God?"
One thing that I like to do is run down the ditch bank on Loma Larga just as the sun is just coming up over the mountains. :)
